Capacitor plague is a royal bitch. Many brands of electronics contain cheap, inferior capacitors which tend to fail prematurely, usually shortly after the warranty expires. The culprits are the low-ESR aluminium electrolytic capacitor using water-based electrolyte with a bad formula. (To complicate things further, a perfectly good capacitor can degrade quickly in a badly designed circuit that exceeds its ratings.) There are lists and hearsays on the Net.
The lifetime is dramatically influenced by the ambient temperature. A capacitor should keep its parameters within specs for 2000 hours at the rated temperature. For each 10 °C less the lifetime roughly doubles; e.g. a 105 °C capacitor will last 8000 hours at 85 °C.
The ESR of the capacitors can be measured by e.g. an ESR meter.
